The Bay Area Youth Vaishnav Parivar is hosting a kite-flying festival for the Makar-Sankranti – Uttarayan Celebrations this coming Saturday, January 16th. I’m woefully ignorant of what the significance of the Makar-Sankranti – Utarrayan celebrations are and its cultural background (which is why, perhaps, I should go to one of these). What I do know about the kite festival is based on having watched some Bollywood movie featuring Aishwarya Rai, the name of which now escapes me. And I have read is that Makar Sankranti, India’s kite-flying festival, commemorates the end of winter as the sun moves into the northern hemisphere. I’m sure I could wikipedia (if Google is now used a verb, so is Wikipedia, right?) more information, but oh well.
On to the details. The location is Murphy Park, Yellowstone Ave. in Milpitas. From 11am to 2pm there will be kite flying; afterwards, there will be a potluck lunch. Bring your own kite.
To see the flyer, which contains further details and contact information, for the event, click here. I’ve read in the Tri-City Voice newspaper that last year’s event attracted more than 500 people.
With all those kites in the air, it should be a beautiful sight.
